An induction sealing capper, or induction sealer, seals a thin foil laminate the lip of a container. The thin foil disc that is sealed with an induction sealer is inside the cap when the cap is purchased and is applied to the container lip when the cap is placed onto the container and tightened. Induction sealing requires the capper container with the foil disc to pass underneath the induction sealing head. The induction sealing head generates an electromagnetic field by applying power to a conductor formed into an inductive coil. The electromagnetic field generated by the induction sealer head is often referred to as an eddy current. As the container passes underneath the induction sealing heat, the electromagnetic field interacts with the foil disc. The foil generates electrical resistance that heats the foil and melts the polymer coating on the disc. The pressure of the cap and the heat generated by the electromagnetic field causes the foil disc to seal to the lip of the container. Induction sealing head do not make contact with the container that the induction sealer seals.

Induction sealers create a hermetic seal between the foil laminate and the lip of the container. The seal is strong enough so that the foil laminate will forcibly be destroyed if the product underneath the foil laminated is accessed. In this manner, induction sealing provides a tamper evident seal inside the cap for a product.

Often, the process of induction sealing will result in the cap of the container to become loose. In order to correct this, cappers called “re-torquers” are used to re-tighten the cap onto the container often follow induction sealers. (See Capper / Semi-Auto for more information.)
