Automatic cartoners are designed to erect a carton from folded pre-scored blank, to load or pack product into the carton, and to seal the carton using either glue or tuck mechanisms, and to accomplish all the operations automatically without input from an operator. Automatic cartoners can be designed for either intermittent or continuous motion.

Intermittent motion automatic cartoners index the carton a given distance or pitch then stop the forward motion of the carton while another operation, such as loading the carton, occurs. Intermittent motion automatic cartoners use product buckets or article buckets to bring product into the machine. The article buckets index with the carton drive so that an article bucket and a carton are lined up at the loading station. At the loading station, a right angle pusher either pneumatically or mechanically driven pushes the product into the carton. The forward motion of an intermittent motion automatic cartoner is stopped while the carton is loaded. Intermittent motion automatic cartoners are generally smaller than comparable continuous motion automatic cartoners but tend to have lower output and higher cycle time.

Continuous motion or constant motion automatic cartoners accomplish all the necessary steps to erect, load, and seal the carton without stopping the forward motion of the erected carton. Continuous motion automatic cartoners use a special loading mechanism call a barrel cam to properly time in-coming product with the continually moving cartons and to load the product while the cartons are moving. Continuous motion automatic cartoners bring product into the cartoner using article buckets or product buckets that are sized to the product that is being loaded, and that are timed to the motion of the cartoner. As the product approaches the carton load operation, a pusher arm, which is also timed to the motion of the cartoner, is pushed by a roller on a cam through the article bucket and to the carton, thereby pushing the product into the carton. The pusher arm is then retracted because of the roller on the cam. The pusher arm then rotates below a drum and back to load another product into the carton. (The drum resembles a barrel and the pusher arm is guided using cams, hence the name barrel cam.) The barrel cam has many pusher arms to match up with article buckets resulting in the cartons being continuously loaded.
