Horizontal cartoners are designed to erect a carton from a flat blank and seal the carton using either glue or tuck flaps. A blank is a pre-scored, flat-folded carton that already has one seam, called the manufacturer's seam, along the back side of the carton already sealed. Horizontal cartoners remove the blank from a blank magazine using either vacuum cups to pick off one blank or some other blank pick-off mechanism. The blank carton is then placed between drive lugs that help erect or unfold the carton. The horizontal cartoner then indexes the carton to the carton loading station where product is loaded into the carton. For manual load or semi-automatic cartoners, operators load product into the carton. For automatic cartoners, the cartoner automatically loads the product into the carton. After the carton has been loaded, the horizontal cartoner seals the carton. On a glue horizontal cartoner, the carton is sealed by applying glue to the carton flaps. On a tuck horizontal cartoner, the carton is sealed by tucking the flaps of the carton into slits in other parts of the carton
