Tray formers / packers are designed to erect a tray and load or pack it with products. Tray formers / packers have operations similar to case packers and are often used in the same step of the production process. Trays are used instead of cases for applications where a full case is unnecessary or, in more recent developments, for display of bulk packages when the tray and product are shrink wrapped. Tray formers / packers can be designed with any of a number of methods for loading the tray including end load, two end load, in-line, and wrap-around.

End load tray formers / packers partially form the trays and load the product from one end of the tray. End load tray formers / packers then complete the formation of the tray. Two end load tray formers / packers operate similarly to end load tray formers / packers except that product is loaded from both ends of the tray. The tray loading operation of two end load tray formers / packers reduces the amount of travel of the product as the product is loaded onto the tray, which normally increases speed, but also increases the amount of container handling necessary before the product can be loaded into the tray, which increases the complexity of the operation.

In-line tray formers / packers can be designed for continuous motion. In-line tray formers / packers bring take in product in a straight line and time a tray blank to pass underneath the containers as the containers are transferred from the infeed conveyor to the machine. The tray is then formed from the tray blank and sealed around the container by different plows and mechanisms in the in-line tray former / packer as the product and tray continue their forward progress in a straight line.

Wrap-around tray formers / packers are also designed to load product onto a flat tray blank. The operation of the wrap-around tray formers / packers load the product onto the tray blank and pulls / pushes the tray blank with the product on it through a tray forming head which fold the tray flaps around the product. The wrap around tray former / packer then moves the tray and product through various plows and mechanisms to seal the tray flaps.
