Tri-blenders are used to mix dry powders with a liquid on a continuous basis. Tri-blenders use a centrifugal pump as the primary drive for the mixing and the infeed of both the liquid and the dry powder. The centrifugal pump is mounted so that the impeller rotates horizontally. Liquid is pumped into the tri-blender into the outer portion of a tube within a tube above the normal intake of the centrifugal pump. The liquid then flows to the pump where the impeller accelerates the liquid with a minimum of splashing. Dry product is usually contained within a hopper above the tri-blender. The motion of the centrifugal pump draws the product from the hopper and inside the tube within a tube. The product and the liquid initially mix near the center point of the rotating impeller. The physical forces affecting the liquid at the location within the tri-blender result in a vacuum being created within the liquid which leads to the product very quickly dissolving into the liquid. Once the product and the liquid have been properly mixed, the liquid mixture is accelerated out the discharge of the centrifugal pump.

Tri-blenders are often used to mix a dry powder or product into a batch tank of liquid. A discharge pump for the tank draws liquid out of the tank and into the tri-blender. Dry product is then mixed with the process liquid in the tri-blender, and the mixture of dry product and process liquid is then sent back into the tank using the tri-blender’s discharge capacity. With this configuration, a tri-blender can be used to dissolve a given amount of dry product into a given amount of liquid more efficiently than by agitating the entire tank mixture.
