Vacuum pumps are designed to remove air from the pump’s opening, and by this removal of air creating a vacuum. Vacuum pumps can be any of a number of different configurations, including rotary piston vacuum pumps, liquid ring vacuum pumps, rotary vane vacuum pumps, and dry screw vacuum pumps.
Rotary piston vacuum pumps have one or multiple pistons driven by a common shaft. Gas is drawn into a rotary piston vacuum pump through a one-way valve as the piston is drawn back. The air is exhausted as the piston is drawn forward.
Liquid ring vacuum pumps use a liquid as a sealant to seal between the impeller and the casing. As the rotor rotates within the casing, air is accelerated around the casing and out the discharge outlet creating a vacuum at the air inlet.
Rotary vane vacuum pumps trap incoming air between the vane and the casing of the pump. As the vanes continue to rotate, more air is drawn away from the inlet of the rotary vane vacuum pump and discharged through the outlet. The decrease in air results in a vacuum at the rotary vane vacuum pump’s inlet.
Dry screw vacuum pumps use two counter-rotating screws to draw air away from the pump inlet. As more and more air is drawn away from the inlet, a vacuum is created at the inlet of the dry screw vacuum pump. Dry screw vacuum pumps process the air without adding oil to the air.
