A freeze dry machine uses both low temperature and vacuum to achieve the removal of moisture from heat sensitive materials. The freeze dryer process is either batch for smaller processing requirements or about 500 Sq ft for the largest batch system available and larger requirements are achieved in continuous operations. The freeze drying operation uses the freezing process to lock up the moisture and the using a vacuum to reduce the boiling point to flash off the moisture at this reduced temperature (sublimation).
The product is also heated during the freeze drying process to further drive the moisture out of the materials and enable complete drying down to as low as 1 to 2%. Freeze dryers are used especially with heat sensitive precuts and in pharmaceutical operations called hypnotization.
