“I need it yesterday!”

You’ve heard that. You’ve probably said it yourself. We in packaging are a pretty impatient lot of people and with good reason. The success of our company/product/campaign all depend on speed and nimbleness.

Picture this: Marketing has just come to you with a killer new product that is going to set the market ablaze. They are impatient to get it out there…yesterday. You can’t make it on your existing line, so you need to get a new one. Typically, you’re looking at 6-8 months from the time of the decision until production of units for sale. And that’s for a relatively simple, relatively low speed, line. A complex line takes even longer.

Several things are happening during that time:

• Your competitor wants to know what you are up to. The longer the new product takes to come to market, the more likely they are to find out. Will you be another case of a new product getting beat out with Brand X’s copycat? When that happens, who looks fresh and innovative and who looks stale?
• Walmart is probably a significant part of your business and you can’t let them down. Ditto you contract packagers. Your business is built (or should be) on timely implementation of the brand owner’s ideas. They have choices, but your nimbleness helps keep you the first one.
• Your line, running a single shift at 200ppm line, will make nearly half a million products each week. A dime profit on each product is $50,000 lost every week until the line is up and running. Shorten the delivery time and you put more jingle in your jeans.

Be impatient. You won’t get it yesterday (unless you can invent a time machine) but you can get it in fewer tomorrows if you work at it.
