CHECKWEIGHING

Most packaging lines need checkweighing. Others need inspection for particulates including things like glass chips or metal particles.

Still others, such as TV dinners in closed trays need to be inspected for multiple components.

I used to think that all this would require separate machines for each function.

At PackExpo I had the pleasure of a lengthy conversation with and engineer from Eagle product Inspection www.eaglepi.com I learned that their X-ray inspection machine could not only perform all the inspections that an X-ray machine is expected to. It could also perform net weight checkweighing. It does this by calculating the mass of the product and container from the X-ray scan. It can identify the container weight by its mass, deduct it from the total weight and verify the net weight of the product contained.

Very nifty technology. Integrating multiple functions into a single machine should allow a smaller footprint than the multiple machines that might otherwise be required.
