12 years ago I put a basketball goal off the driveway to give my kids the chance to be the next Michael Jordan. The goal received more than its fair share of “use” and recently we decided to upgrade.
Unfortunately for me, I put it in with enough concrete to guarantee that it would never be removed without an incredible force of nature. After realizing how far deep I poured the concrete, I figured that my best course of action was to saw through the metal pipe (and concrete inside).
After researching Home Depot’s rental tools, I found a Makita angle grinder for $20 and a $3 blade that would do the job. Landing on a rental price, I naturally checked the price of owning this tool – which ended up being triple the cost. I came to a fork in the road. Should I buy or should I rent?
Now, I’ve made the choice to buy many times of course. But, I asked myself in this particular situation how realistic would it be for me to use this again – or again after that. I needed it for all of 10 minutes.
Did I really need this tool going unused in my already-stuffed garage in the meantime?
Total cost of ownership in this case included the cost of taking up space and or being one more thing to cram into an already crowded space.
Many of our customers come across the same question – rent or buy? What’s the right answer? The right answer is always… it all depends.
Fortunately with Frain, you have a choice. We don’t care which you choose, but provide machinery for sale or rent all the same.
While my kids dreams of being the next Michael Jordan may be fading away like one of his best jump shots, borrowing used equipment is my new, go-to option for my next project.
