Your Focus Is Your Greatest Asset. Don’t Waste It.

As a manager, you have a seemingly endless list of things to get done. There are people to talk to, paperwork to fill out, line problems to address, calls to make and so much more — not to mention the production goals and quotas you’d like to meet, which will require some serious planning and process management. Everyone and everything is fighting for your time, but does it all need your attention? The thing that separates good managers from great managers is that great production managers know how valuable their focused time is. Let’s explore that idea more and see what Frain can do to help you with that struggle.

If you are constantly tied up in the routine tasks of the plant, you won’t be able to get above the everyday to see how things could be improved, to anticipate potential issues, or to solve problems on the macro scale. Ultimately this hurts your plant’s overall productivity as you run into issues which could have been avoided had you been able to better focus your time on what only you can do. Your ability to create time and space to focus on the bigger picture and processes is key. But how do you do that? Here are a few ideas.

Delegate The Tasks That Don’t Need Your Full Attention

One easy way to begin to protect your focus is to delegate the daily tasks that don’t need your full attention. Just because you’re the manager doesn’t mean that it’s your job to be involved in every piece of your plant’s work. Often managers will think that because they are responsible for the plant, they need to be a part of every process, but that simply is not true. Hopefully, you’ve hired a team of competent and qualified people who are able to work together to solve problems. Trust them to do what you’ve hired them to do.

Your role as a manager is to train and empower them to be able to make smart decisions which reflect your company’s values and meet or exceed your production goals. By empowering employees and supervisors to handle the bulk of the daily tasks and problems that arise, you free yourself to focus on the bigger picture and more complex needs of the plant. As an added bonus, you also create an environment for your team to become even more capable and productive as they look to solve their own problems. The more empowered, competent and productive they are, the less you need to be involved.

Schedule Time For Big-Picture Thinking

Because so many people and things are fighting for your attention, it can be easy to fill your week and leave little to no space for big-picture thinking. This is sometimes called “sacrificing the important for the urgent.” If you spend all your time on the urgent, you won’t be able to tend to the important parts of your job. Instead of letting things fill your schedule, start your week by scheduling time for big-picture thinking. Block it off in your calendar and fight hard to protect it. If you had an important meeting with the bigwigs and a client, you wouldn’t miss it. Why? Because those kinds of meetings are important. In the same way, making time for big-picture thinking is important.

If you’re not thinking about the future, anticipating needs and problems and making plans to address those future goals and issues, who will? The only way to reach future goals and avoid incoming issues is to make a plan to address them.

Make Sure Your Team Has the Equipment They Need to Get the Job Done Well

An empowered and well-trained team can make the most of whatever situation it finds itself in, but eventually, your machines and tools will become a bottleneck. The better your team, the more productive and efficient it will be. But if your machines are dated, constantly breaking down, or otherwise not up to snuff, all the team efficiency in the world can’t speed up production. Eventually, you’ll reach a point where your machines are distracting you, keeping you from meeting your goals and pulling you from your role overseeing the big picture. It might seem like a good business move to cut costs on equipment, but if you take that gamble and you lose, it can cost you millions in potential profit. Getting to market consistently and quickly is crucial to meeting and exceeding your company’s profit goals. The right tools can help you do that.

At Frain, we understand your struggle well. Getting the equipment you need in a timely fashion is important. Knowing that the equipment you ordered is ready for use may be more important still. We’ve worked hard to develop a process that takes the stress off your shoulders, and to meet your needs — however large — so that you can focus less on equipment issues and more on reaching your goals.

Finding a Bargain

Every once in a while in life you’re able to find a true bargain and it feels good to do so.

On the flip side, what you may believe initially is a bargain could very well be the exact opposite – a complete waste of time and money.

That’s often the case we hear from people who find “as-is” used equipment somewhere on the internet.

They find a machine at a fraction of the price (not cost) of new or certified pre-owned / customized as Frain provides.

The problem is that, as it is, the equipment doesn’t work for them. They need to reconfigure the machine to their packaging.

Take for example someone that called us regarding a labeler. It was set up to label a different package with different size and labels.

They called us because they really didn’t have much of an idea of what to do with it now.

At no charge whatsoever, we did offer them several tips on how to best move forward in re-configuring the machine.

The tone of this person was clearly that of “I’m in over my head.” A place where no one wants to be.  It ends up costing you far more than just the initial price you paid.

You can spend a lot of time in hunting down a bargain and then time in trial, error, and frustration in working with your machinery.  But, all of that will cost you with hidden fees that sometimes far outweigh the price you would have paid in getting the right machinery in the first place.

Frain doesn’t just sell you a machine. We sell you our full integration service or services to get the machine or complete packaging line running to your specifications.

Not only do we rebuild each machine, we reconfigure it to your application.

We have approximately 50 engineers and technicians on hand to service and reconfigure an inventory of 9,000 machines to meet your needs fast.

And, at a discount from new machinery prices – we’re a bargain.

4 Failed Myths to Avoid When Obtaining Machinery

Obtaining equipment is a huge commitment that many companies may or may not be ready to pursue. Many seek traditional alternatives like buying equipment, while others follow a contemporary route by renting or leasing equipment. Whatever the choice, Frain is here to help clarify some common myths.

Myth 1: Purchasing is always the way to go.

While purchasing equipment may be the right solution for some companies, it is certainly not a one-size-fits-all approach. Buyers often rely on advisors with little-to-no knowledge of the industry, equipment or application to guide their decision. Thus, businesses may purchase equipment not best suited for the job. This creates setbacks that companies are usually not prepared to manage such as cash flow constraints. On the other hand, companies that are well advised and have successfully introduced the product to market are best suited for equipment purchases.

Myth 2: Purchasing NEW is the only risk free solution.

Many individuals and companies prefer to buy new (OEM) equipment because of the machine warranty and established name. Others prefer to buy new because it has become part of the business routine. Several companies have a difficult time understanding that purchasing new equipment is not the only risk free solution. With used certified pre-owned machinery offering the same warranty as OEM’s at a faster turnaround times and satisfactory guarantees, companies can save time and money on equipment purchases. This, consequently, decreases downtime and gets the product to market faster than the traditional OEM solution.

Myth 3: Alternative procurement methods are too risky or nerve wrecking.

As stated above, some companies are set in their ways and often turn to purchasing equipment because it is what they have done for years. The fear of doing something that can cost the company a lot more than it saves holds several individuals back from innovation. A lack of adaptation can push toward the demise of an enterprise, and has held true in different cases from animal extinction to equipment and technology. In the packaging and processing industry, Frain responded to the way the consumer market seeks equipment with an innovative rental option that gets products to market faster. The rental option offers several benefits, including a lower investment, manageable payments, cash flow control, and increased production.  A flexible program, like Frain’s rental service, is best suited for seasonal peaks, product introduction, company expansion, or contract packagers, but anyone can take advantage of it.

Myth 4: Renting and leasing are basically the same.

Leasing offers a hybrid of the contemporary rental and the traditional purchase. It allows individuals to purchase equipment while spreading out payments as desired by the customer (12, 24 or 36 months). This flexibility gives the customer cash flow control and insurance from purchasing equipment outright. This opportunity may not be suited for everyone, but many individuals find comfort in flexible operational and/or capital costs.

In general, obtaining equipment can be challenging. Ultimately understanding the needs of the business, project scope, company capital, and testing the effect of a new product or production increase will aid in weighting the pros and cons of a machinery purchase, rental or lease, and help individuals make educated decisions.

Not sure where to start or how to get the equipment you need? Frain can lead the way.

Plug and Play Equipment

Not only do buyers want machinery they’re looking for yesterday, several customers describe their needs along the lines of…”I need the machine to be plug and play, ready to go.”

When we hear this, we are delighted to know that we have a customer that understands what they need to succeed.  They need a machine that has been customized to meet their needs, regardless of how simple or complex they are.

Alternatively, we often hear the opposite or not that they need a machine at all.  These requests sound more like…”I need a price.”

You’ve heard the saying, you’ve won the battle but not the war – this is the case for price shoppers.  If price defines success you may certainly setting yourself up for losing the war.

Pennywise and pound foolish is also a phrase that applies.  Sure, you save and purchased a machine either of lesser quality, not integrated or calibrated for your product, or months behind your competition.

After 35 years of seeing what works, we stopped selling used, as is processing and packaging machinery.  Instead, we now sell our vast, at-the-ready inventory, that’s selected for you by our engineers based on your actual samples, and calibrated by our team of over 40 technicians.

Trust us when we say – you want plug and play.
