Something your marketing team may not think about is that you can save a lot of changeover time with properly-designed packages. Take these pharmaceutical vials for example. This company made a product in a 5 and 10 milliliter vial. These vials look like they are the same diameter but they’re actually 63-thousanths of an inch difference. You can’t see that difference but the packaging machine can!

So instead of a 5 minute changeover on 3 machines, this company was having to do a 90 minute, 3-dimensional changeover on 5 machines. That’s 85 minutes per day lost to change over, or 20 percent of their manufacturing capacity because of 63 thousandths of an inch. This could have been avoided if they had just known to pick vials with the same diameter.
